Symptoms
- VMware Tools 4.1 and newer does not automatically uninstall the SYNC driver.
- Upgrading VMware Tools and specifying SYNC removal by using
/s /v "/qn ADDLOCAL=ALL REMOVE=Sync REBOOT=ReallySuppress"
does not remove the SYNC driver.
Resolution
The sync driver is only required for legacy versions of Windows, such as Windows XP and Windows 2000, which do not include the Microsoft VSS service.
When upgrading pre-4.1 versions of VMware Tools, it allows you to uninstall the SYNC driver. However, because SYNC functionality is not necessary in any guest OS that has the VSS service, the VMware Tools installer no longer offers the option to uninstall the SYNC driver.
