VMFS5 vs VMFS6

Several versions of the VMFS file system have been released since its introduction. ESXi supports VMFS3, VMFS5, and VMFS6.

For all VMFS version, ESXi offers complete read and write support. On all versions of VMFS, you can create and power on virtual machines.

Host Access to VMFS Versions:-

VMFS5

VMFS3

Note:
You can continue to use existing VMFS3 datastores, but you cannot create new ones. If you have existing VMFS3 datastores, migrate virtual machines to the VMFS6 datastore.

When you work with VMFS5 and VMFS6 datastores, consider the following:
  1. Upgrade. After you upgrade your ESXi hosts to version 6.5, you can continue using any existing VMFS5 datastores. To take advantage of VMFS6 features, create a VMFS6 datastore and migrate virtual machines from the VMFS5 datastore to VMFS6 datastore. You cannot upgrade the VMFS5 datastore to VMFS6.
  2. Datastore Extents. A spanned VMFS datastore must use only homogeneous storage devices, either 512n or 512e. The spanned datastore cannot extend over devices of different formats.
  3. Block Size. The block size on a VMFS datastore defines the maximum file size and the amount of space a file occupies. VMFS5 and VMFS6 datastores support the block size of 1 MB.
  4. Storage vMotion. Storage vMotion supports migration across VMFS, vSAN, and Virtual Volumes datastores. vCenter Serverperforms compatibility checks to validate Storage vMotion across different types of datastores.
  5. Storage DRS. VMFS5 and VMFS6 can coexist in the same datastore cluster. However, all datastores in the cluster must use homogeneous storage devices, either 512n or 512e. Do not mix devices of different formats within the same datastore cluster.

Upgrading VMFS 5

VMware does not support upgrading from VMFS5 to VMFS6.

A VMFS6 datastore can be created only as a new datastore.

However, you can use VMware vSphere Storage vMotion to migrate data from your VMFS5 datastore to a VMFS6 datastore.

How to Verify Discovered VM is adopted in vCD?

When an adopted vApp is retrieved with a vCloud API request, it includes an element named autoNature. This element has a value of false if the discovered vApp was adopted or was created in vCloud Director. You cannot revert an adopted vApp to a discovered vApp.

Deleting Orphaned VM from vCenter Inventory in vSphere Web Client

Orphaned VMs in vCenter Inventory is not an new Issue. But last week one of my customer struggled for removing it from inventory as in vSphere Web Client, he did not get remove from inventory option when my client right clicked on orphaned vm.

In vSphere Web Client, Remove VM from Inventory option is not directly available when you do right click on VM. For this Click on All Virtual Infrastructure Actions > More Uncategorized Actions > Remove for Inventory.

Cannot install the vCenter Server agent service. Unknown installer error System

Issue
Cannot install the vCenter Server agent service. Unknown installer error System
Cause
This issue occurs due to the process in which VMware-fdm-uninstall.sh runs when there is a reboot request set on the host.
Resolution
This issue is resolved in vCenter Server 6.5.x,
To work around this issue in earlier versions, place the affected host(s) in maintenance mode and reboot them to clear the reboot request.
